Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event that
spotlights upcoming releases that I’m really
looking forward to. Waiting On Wednesday
is the creation of Jill at Breaking the Spine.
This week’s “can’t-wait-to-read” selection is:
The Heron’s Cry
A Detective Matthew Venn Novel #2
Ann Cleeves
Minotaur Books, September 2021
Mystery, Police Procedural
From the publisher—
North Devon is enjoying a rare hot summer with tourists flocking to its coastline. Detective Matthew Venn is called out to a rural crime scene at the home of a group of artists. What he finds is an elaborately staged murder–Dr Nigel Yeo has been fatally stabbed with a shard of one of his glassblower daughter’s broken vases.
Dr. Yeo seems an unlikely murder victim. He’s a good man, a public servant, beloved by his daughter. Matthew is unnerved, though, to find that she is a close friend of Jonathan, his husband.
Then another body is found–killed in a similar way. Matthew soon finds himself treading carefully through the lies that fester at the heart of his community and a case that is dangerously close to home.
Why am I waiting so eagerly? Ann Cleeves has well and truly earned her place in my list of top five police procedural crime fiction writers and I’m equally, if not more, addicted to Vera and Shetland, the two British TV series based on her books. I’m new to this third series but really want to jump in so I’ll start with this second book, then go back to catch up with the first. Based on the author’s writing in the first two series, I’m quite sure this will be just as compelling and I need to get a head start on the books before the new TV series debuts sometime in 2022 😄.
