The Lovers in Crime, Hancock County Prosecutor Joshua Thornton and Homicide Detective Cameron Gates expect it to be a summer of change and change it does!

Joshua’s eldest son, Joshua Thornton Jr. (J.J.) has graduated at the top of his class from law school and returns home to spend the summer studying for the bar exam. However, to Joshua’s and Cameron’s shock and dismay, J.J. moves into the main house at Russell Ridge Farm and Orchards, the largest dairy farm in the Ohio Valley, in order to rekindle a romance with Suellen Russell, the one-time leader of a rock group and recently retired symphony conductor twice his age.

Readers of Lauren’s debut series, the Joshua Thornton Mysteries, are in for a treat with Killer in the Band, which re-introduces Joshua Thornton, Jr. (J.J.), Joshua’s first born son and Murphy Thornton’s (of the Thorny Rose Mysteries) identical twin. In recent books, J.J. has only made brief appearances. In Killer in the Band, he moves to the forefront to help his father and Cameron solve the cold case murder of a rock singer whose body had been found in an abandoned psychiatric hospital.

Even though J.J. is Murphy’s identical twin, Lauren warns readers not to expect him to be a carbon copy of the dashing special ops naval officer in the Thorny Rose Mysteries. “In many ways, J.J. is very much like Murphy,” Lauren says, “but in other ways, he’s the opposite. J.J. inherited more of his killer-in-the-bandfather’s cerebral talents. He’s quieter than Murphy, which is emphasized by his love for music and books. Readers find out in Killer in the Band that he was a musical prodigy, which was what had brought him and Suellen, an orchestra conductor, together. But,” the mystery writer warns with a grin, “you know what they say about the quiet ones.”

J.J.’s homecoming brings long buried familial tensions to the surface—not the least of which being J.J.’s dislike for his stepmother Cameron, a conflict that lingers in the background of Lauren’s latest fast-paced mystery.

“It would be so easy for J.J. to simply ignore Cameron,” Lauren says, “but that proves to be impossible when Suellen Russell asks for her help in solving the murder of her rock group’s lead singer. Suddenly, the two are thrown together and forced to work out their differences.”

Then, when their investigation causes a brutal killer to strike at home, the Lovers in Crime must set all family conflict aside to solve the crime before J.J. ends up in the cross-hairs of a murderer.
