Dragon RisingDragon Rising
The Untold Story of Asher Grey
Eden’s Root #4
Rachel E. Fisher
Rachel E. Fisher, August 2014
Ebook Novella

From the author—

In his freshman year at Columbia University, future journalist Asher Grey is forced to face his darkest demons when the world falls to pieces. A champion Tai Chi swordsman, he will be tested to his limits just to survive. With a heavy heart and swift hand, he must reach deep inside himself to discover what it means to be a Dragon.

Asher hasn’t seen his father in months, not since he left Chicago to go to college in New York. Then the world went to hell in a handbasket and his college days became just a memory. Classrooms and books have been replaced by starvation and bloodthirsty gangs and the only way he can stay alive is to keep moving from one hiding place to another. Maybe he should havce tried to walk to Chicago but what if his dad is coming to New York to find him?

Asher is a Night Crawler but he’s about to become a Lifer, fighting in the ring for the right to eat for one more day. The thing is, that might also mean giving up on who he really is.

Dragon Rising is a nice introduction to Asher Grey but also to a number of other characters we meet in the Eden’s Root Trilogy proper. There are a few pitfalls, primarily the lack of any backstory for how the world came to be in this condition. Because I’d already read (inhaled is more like it) the trilogy, I knew what Asher meant by the term “Foodmageddon” but a reader who’s new to the saga would have no idea. This is a novella that gives us the backstory of one character and it would be easy to mistake it as a prequel even though it’s labeled as #4; it is not a prequel in the usual sense and should be read after the first three books or, at the least, after Eden’s Root. Then you’ll just be adding to the pleasure you’ve already gotten  😉

Swoon Romance, September 2014
Ebook

From the publisher—

In the town of Belle Ridge there are doctors, lawyers and teachers… but there is only one vampire. Will Leighton has become an expert in making a life for himself amongst the unsuspecting small-town inhabitants, as the high school history teacher. He has spent hundreds of years crafting an identity and routine that make him feel almost human, but he is always missing that important final element, love.

Ashton Wallace is beautiful, smart, and angry. She was forced into an eternal existence, and now her family has moved her away from everything and everyone she knows. In Belle Ridge she is supposed to finish high school and start her life again, but how do you make plans for the next several centuries?

Will has never met another of his kind, and is immediately intrigued by Ashton. He longs to show her that the perceived vampire lifestyle, so popular in storybooks, is far from reality…but will she let him be a friend and guide in this new existence? Can Ashton accept Will into her life, or will she be led astray by a dark stranger with whom she shares an unknown connection?

I have a love-hate relationship with vampires. Most of the time, I prefer them to be either funny or mean and nasty, worthy representatives of the Dracula tradition and Vlad the Impaler. Romantic stuff generally leaves me cold and I might as well ‘fess up. I read the first book in the Twilight series because, as a bookstore owner, I sort of had to but—gasp!—I detested it. Yes, the truth is out, I’m not a fan of sparkly. So, why on earth did I have any interest in Unrequited?

Two things in the description drew me in. First, the idea of a high school teacher and a student niggled at me. Was the author really going to go there? Really? Second, there was the twist that there are so few vampires in Ms. Shaffer’s world that Will could have gone 200 years without ever meeting any others.

Ashton is an interesting character but I must say her parents are remarkably accepting of her, um, condition, and I can only suppose it’s because they have little choice. She herself is handling the whole thing better than you might anticipate from a high school senior and I was happy to avoid the histrionics we so often see.

Will and Griffin, on the other hand, are so, well, nice (it takes Griffin a while to get there) that they irritated me even while I thought they were pretty good guys. As for the love triangle—I wish every author would forget they ever heard of such a thing.

Because some of the elements of vampirism we’ve come to expect are missing, I kind of wondered why the author chose to make her male characters vampires in the first place. Why not another kind of supe that naturally fits into the human world more easily?

The ending was put together to lead the reader to the second book and I have no problem with that. I did feel shortchanged with the altercation that takes place at the end, a prime example of telling rather than showing but, fortunately, that sort of writing style is rare in Unrequited.

I have to mention that I appreciated the care that Ms. Shaffer and her publisher took in the construction of this ebook. Very few typos or other construction errors came to my attention and that’s a pleasure in today’s quicksand of ebook production. I do wonder, though, why Unrequited is not available on Nook and I hope that will be remedied soon.

Book Review: Pierced by Thomas Enger—and a Giveaway!

PiercedPierced
Thomas Enger
Atria, October 2012
ISBN 978-1-4516-1648-4
Trade Paperback

Pierced is an exciting novel chock-full of action and characters all woven together into a rather complicated plot. Translated from Norwegian, it is written in many short chapters, some as short as two pages. This style serves the story well, keeping events and plot turns coming quickly.

The novel opens twenty two months after Henning Juul’s young son died in a fire (in Burned, the prequel) that Juul cannot fully remember. In Pierced, Hennng Juul lives one mystery while he tries to solve another. He is contacted by a convict who promises him information about that day if Juul will investigate his conviction which he claims was a set-up.

The best part of the story, I thought, involved Thorlief Brenden, an innocent TV cameraman who finds himself caught up in events that don’t involve him and that he cannot understand. It is Brenden who pulled this reader into the action, trying to imagine what she might do in similar circumstances, what she can do in various threatening situations. For much of the book, the fast-paced chapters swap back and forth between events involving Henning Juul and Thorlief Brenden.

There are many characters in Pierced and Enger has a style where he names just about everyone. There were too many names for this reader to follow. But after awhile, it does become clear which ones matter and which don’t. This reader kept a list of names and it became quite long and eventually, helpful.

Pierced is Enger’s second novel in the Juul Henning series. I did not realize this as I was reading and didn’t feel that I needed to start with his first novel in the series, Burned. The ending does set things up for the next novel, although there is much that is resolved in Pierced. From the writer’s website, I learned he is planning to write a total of six novels for the series. So, if you like this one, Scarred, the third one is already available and three more are promised.

Book Reviews: Can’t Look Away by Donna Cooner, Phantom Limb by Dennis Palumbo, and The Bones Beneath by Mark Billingham

Can't Look AwayCan’t Look Away
Donna Cooner
Point, August 2014
ISBN 978-0-545-42765-4
Hardcover

From an outside perspective, Torrey Grey is your typical 16 year old in today’s age. She thrives to be popular, focuses her time on fashion and makeup, and social media are her go-to’s. But when her sister is killed by a drunk driver while filming her latest video blog – and the worlds finds out – she discovers celebrity status on the internet can make you or break you.

When I first started reading Donna Cooner‘s book, I was apprehensive about reading a modern day take on a teenager’s life. But as I continued, there are so many themes that Cooner covers. Sisterhood is a main theme, as Torrey is trying to hold on to the memories of her sister, Miranda. By combining in the celebration of the Spanish holiday el Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), Cooner shows that grief and acceptance of the loss of a close family member as Torrey’s family try to pick up the pieces of their life after moving from Colorado to Texas. One of Cooner‘s bigger themes is the presence of bullying and cyberbullying, from students making fun and commenting on a student who may be seen as different to the norm of society, to strangers blaming Torrey for the death of her sister when a video leaks of the moments before the accident. Torrey deals with all of these themes as she struggles to decide if popularity and being seen with the right cliques are really the most important things in her life anymore.

While some of the characters seem “too-good-to-be-true,” Cooner manages to keep her main themes alive throughout the novel and presents a solid take on a teenager living in today’s world. I enjoyed the book more than I expected to, and was glad to see somebody take on these heavy themes and relate them to issues many teenagers may be going through today.

Hardcover
Also available in trade paperback

Author Dennis Palumbo is an experienced writer of screen plays, short stories and crime novels. It shows in this episodic story that features his protagonist, Dr. Daniel Rinaldi, a licensed psychologist and consultant to the Pittsburgh, PA police department. This fourth adventure pits the good doctor against a macho cabal of former military who formed up in Afghanistan and took many of their less savory skills into the criminal culture of Western Pennsylvania.

Dr. Rinaldi has an initial session with the younger wife of a local extremely prominent businessman. She professes a need and a decision to commit suicide that very evening. Dr. Rinaldi, in attempting to dissuade the woman, is drawn instantly into a convoluted interesting plot to extract millions of dollars from her wealthy husband. Inevitably, Rinaldi is required to deliver the ransom and things go seriously awry.

There are some stalwart continuing characters who return from earlier books in this novel. There are some predictable scenes. Overall the novel is very well written and there are several scenes of excruciating high tension and exciting action. There are clever lines and some well-thought-out twists, and, unfortunately for this reviewer, just a little too much predictability in the structure of the plot. I really like Daniel Rinaldi. I like his style, his attitudes and the moral strengths displayed in this novel. And I like the books of his creator.

The Bones BeneathThe Bones Beneath
A Tom Thorne Novel
Mark Billingham
Atlantic Monthly Press, June 2014
ISBN: 978-1-8021-2248-3
Hardcover

Tom Thorne returns in the twelfth novel in this series.  Most of the action takes place over a period of three days, set in a remote, isolated and nearly inaccessible island off the Welsh coast, said to be the resting place of 20,000 saints (in addition, that is, to King Arthur).  (This appears to be a very real location, one ‘steeped in myth and legend,’ and is a very real presence in the novel.)  Tom is brought here as part of a very ‘un-spiritual pursuit of long-dead murder victims,” a prisoner escort operation.

Many years ago, and only briefly, the island was the site of a home for young offenders.  Two of these were 17-year-old Stuart Nicklin, and one Simon Milner, the latter of whom never left the island alive. His murder was never solved, and only now Nicklin has claimed to have killed him, and offered to lead the police to the place where Simon’s bones were buried so long ago.  The condition being that the man who had arrested him ten years earlier, Tom Thorne, be the one to take him there to identify the site. Nicklin is thought to be one of the “most dangerous and manipulative psychopaths” the police had ever encountered.  The suspense inherent in the situation leaves the reader waiting for the other shoe to drop.  And waiting.  And waiting.

Somewhat jarringly at first, there are flashbacks to the time, twenty-five years earlier, when the seeds of the current action were laid, and when the boy whose bones were at the core of their search was killed.  And there are also scenes, at the outset in a Prologue and then every hundred pages or so, that appear to be contemporaneous, their connection to the main plot difficult to discern.

It may be obvious that I felt that the book could have benefited from some tightening, but in retrospect perhaps I should have had more confidence in the author, because the conclusion was very exciting and unexpected.  It may be that the bar being set so high by this author in the preceding books made it a tough act to follow.  My current reservations aside, I will certainly look forward to the next Tom Thorne book.

Harper, September 2014

Hardcover

From the publisher—

When Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital, she’s confused—who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why?

It seems impossible that anyone would have it out for the town darling. Thanks to her family’s distinguished history and her own unassailable reputation in old-money Jessup, Eva is universally liked. But she has little time to consider the question when she finds that she’s awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people’s deaths when they touch her.

Eva is struggling to understand just what these visions mean when a slew of murders takes place back home. The victims, all classmates, are discovered alongside eerie messages that tie the incidents to her. There is a killer on the loose, and he is after Eva.

While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old friend, reappears. The two traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva’s power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. But while Eva and Nate grow closer, the determined killer grows increasingly frantic in his attempt to get to Eva.

************

I met Melissa Marr years ago back in the days when my bookstore was open. She had come to the store for a signing event with her debut book, Wicked Lovely, the first in a young adult dark faerie series. The event itself wasn’t overwhelmingly successful—few signings are, especially for debut authors and more especially in my town—but we had a chance to talk and, although we couldn’t have been much more different from each other, we shared a love of books and a desire to encourage teens to read. I fell in love with her work that day and I’ve done my best since then to keep up with her books. When I heard she was branching out with a young adult mystery thriller, I was completely intrigued with the thoughts of what she could do with it.

Ms. Marr has always had an equally adept hand at plot and character development and Made for You is no exception. Leaving aside the element of Eva becoming a sort of psychic, this is a strong piece of crime fiction. Having been a mystery reader for many, many years, I picked up on a few minor problems with the overall plot but the author really has pulled together a complex story that kept me guessing nearly the whole way through while it also caused a couple of sleepless nights. The town of Jessup is “the sort of place where name and money matter too much” and that atmosphere is an integral part of the nightmare that has begun but how could anyone predict such horror?

Spending much of the time in Judge’s head was both disturbing and energizing and certainly increased the creep factor. He—or she—is a nebulous sort of evil and each chapter with him is more unnerving than the last. From the very beginning, I felt the hollowness in Eva, a girl who has lost someone who meant the world to her but who also just doesn’t seem to fit into her surroundings or among her life-long friends anymore. After being run down, she has a whole new set of questions and, as she begins to learn some painful truths, it’s easy to see in her intelligence and determination, as well as her curiosity, the woman she is about to become.

When it comes to best friends, few can beat Grace, a girl who truly wants Eva to be well and happy. It’s Nate, though, who captured my heart with his prickliness and vulnerability. Once he allows himself to open up a little, he morphs into a boy who has reasons to be standoffish but yet is willing to take chances. I really, really liked this kid.

As far as I can tell, Made for You truly is a standalone but I hope Ms. Marr will continue writing crime fiction—she does it too well to let this be her only foray into the genre.

From the author—

Ten years after the great war of 2185 the queen’s reign is threatened by uprisings and fear. In celebration of my sixteenth birthday it is my duty as princess to sacrifice a slave to be initiated into the ruling council, solidifying my mother’s empire. When my own erratic powers surface I’m captured and tried for treason. Slaves hate me, my mother wants me executed, and my only chance of survival rests in the hands of a young man, Ryder Arteres, whose sister I sentenced to death.
************

I would surely be hard pressed to come up with an opening chapter that is more intense than that in Escapement and, more than 200 pages later, it still gives me chills. The evil that one person can direct at another is chilling and it’s so much worse that a mother could behave in such a manner towards her own daughter. Add in that this young girl feels completely helpless and that her mother’s power is so all-encompassing and you have an amazing story in the making.

Semara is indeed “just” a young girl but her idealism has not been wiped out quite yet…and then things get even worse. Her mother sees the irrefutable proof of Semara’s one instance of defiance and, at the same time, a strange power within Semara shows itself and dooms her to a slave’s existence or, worse, horrific implants to make her compliant. The only person who cares about her at all is a worker named Bendar, or so she thinks, but then a young man named Ryder comes into her life.

Characterization and plot are equally strong in this first in the series. I felt a real empathy with Semara and especially appreciated the friendship between her and Raeth, a friendship that survived incredible odds. At the same time, my natural antipathy for the queen and her general increased exponentially every time one or the other came on the scene while my liking for Ryder, and the attachment between him and Semara, grew as naturally as any reader could want .

The world drawn by Ms. Knight is dismal but rife with questions about just how the aftermath of the war became so despotic and unforgiving and what might lie ahead. The queen’s determination to have complete control and cause such pain to others, her callous indifference, is frightening in its intensity and gave me a good sense of what a true sociopath is. Resistance would seem to be impossible but, as always seems to be the case with humanity, there are those who would see an end to the tyranny. Semara, Raeth and Ryder will discover that they do indeed have reason to hope.

Ms. Knight has pulled me in 100% and I plan to read the rest of the series as soon as I can—I really need to know what will happen next.
